In his gloss of David Wagoner’s poem, Czeslaw Milosz notes the theme of “the impossibility of mutual understanding between man and nature “(14). Milosz highlights a central tension in a critical aspect of human consciousness, the idea that we humans–conscious that we are conscious–find ourselves in a natural world that seems separate from us, yet also a part of us. We are made up of the elements from which nature exists, yet, as Milosz suggests, there exists “the impossibility of mutual understanding between man and nature.” The poems provided offer similar and various notions of the relationship between humans and nature. In this essay you will explore notions of the relationship between humans and nature through the reading, analysis and interpretation of poems about nature.
