INTRODUCTION
During their pharmacy studies students have learnt about a range of drugs that work on
body systems. The Core Drugs List (MPharm Year 4) includes 150 drugs and students are
expected to know the following key information (Core Drugs Essential Knowledge) for each
core drug so that they are fully prepared for practice.
Drug Name
Drug Group
Legal classification
Conditions that the drug is used to treat (Indications) including any restrictions on supply
How the drug works in the condition(s)
The usual adult dose (route, dose, frequency)
Patient monitoring to check that the drug is working
Important side-effects caused by the drug
Patient monitoring to check for side-effects
Important drug interactions
Important disease interactions (Contraindications and Cautions)
Important information to give to the patient
Students were given a card detailing the Core Drugs List (MPharm Year 4) at the end of their
3rd year and further details and the Core Drugs Essential Knowledge Template are included
in the PHAM 1125 (Preparing for Practice) Therapeutics Workbook which all MPharm4
students will be given a copy of.
Therapeutic Frameworks build on this core drug knowledge through the application of core
drug learning to the management of clinical conditions. For this reason assessment of a
written Therapeutic Framework will account for 20% of the final PHAM 1125 (Preparing for
Practice) course mark.
Therapeutic Frameworks are designed to demonstrate students
understanding of the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of key clinical
conditions
understanding of the therapeutic management of key conditions
ability to concisely summarise the drug therapy management of key clinical conditions
ability to select appropriate drugs to treat key clinical conditions and to justify the
selection with reference to published literature
ability to critically discuss the pharmacists contribution to patient care through
consideration of drug side-effects, drug interactions, drug contra-indications / cautions
and patient education
During the year students will write THREE Therapeutic Frameworks using a designated
template (Appendix 1). These frameworks build on students learning of the core drugs in
addition to work covered within other PHAM 1125 (Preparing for Practice) Therapeutics in
Practice teaching sessions and completion of the Therapeutics Workbook thereby enabling
students to apply their knowledge of drugs in the context of clinical conditions.
The 3 Therapeutic Framework topics for 2015/2016 are
1 – (Formative
assessment
exercise)
Therapeutic management of stroke to prevent secondary events in
patients who have experienced an ischaemic stroke or transient
ischaemic attack (TIA)
2 – (Part A) Therapeutic management of glaucoma
3 – (Part B) Therapeutic management of atrial fibrillation
Students will be introduced to the Therapeutic Framework assignment at the beginning of
Term 1.
The stroke Therapeutic Framework (1) will be a formative assessment exercise. Students
will submit their framework through Moodle in week 7 (Deadline: Thursday 5th November).
They will then participate in a Moodle assessment exercise (which will open on Friday 6th
November) where they will assess and provide feedback on example stroke frameworks and
then on their written stroke framework. The aim of this formative exercise is to help
students to understand the assessment criteria and to be able to use the assessment
criteria to accurately mark their stroke Therapeutic Framework.
The glaucoma Therapeutic Framework (2, Part A) will be submitted both through Moodle
and using the formal Medway School of Pharmacy hand-in procedure in week 13 (Thursday
17th December 2015). This framework will be marked by a member of the academic staff
who will provide individualised feedback. In addition, general feedback (based on the
markers observations of all of the frameworks submitted) will be prepared and provided to
students in week 18 (Monday 18th January 2016). This assessment constitutes Part A of the
Therapeutic Framework written assessment and will be weighted at 25% of the final
Therapeutic Framework written assessment mark.
The atrial fibrillation Therapeutic Framework (3, Part 3) will be submitted both through
Moodle and using the formal Medway School of Pharmacy hand-in procedure in week 26
(Thursday 17th March 2016). This framework will be marked by a member of the academic
staff and will constitute Part B of the Therapeutic Framework written assessment and will
be weighted at 75% of the final Therapeutic Framework written assessment mark.
The Therapeutic Framework will consist of 4 sections, references and an appendix.
Section 1 Pathophysiology and clinical manifestations
In this section the student will explain the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations (with
appropriate diagnostic criteria) of the condition.
