Project description
The final assignment of the semester is one, longer, critical paper (5-6 pages) in which students demonstrate their skills at the close analytical reading of one literary text, or the comparison of one text to another (no more than two texts may be used). Through close reading, students will see how the language of a text creates meaning, and––most importantly––demonstrate how the text means what they think it means.
Proposal for the paper: For my proposal I plan to write about Alice Munro’s short story Dance of the Happy Shades. I plan on analyzing why does the mother keep attending the same parties of Miss Marsalles if she does not enjoy it. Why she feels like she needs to find excuses not to go to the party for her daughter. Every time when someone needs to find an excuse not to go somewhere, there is a good reason why. If the mother has a need to find an excuse not to go to the party every year, she should have a reason why. I plan on analyzing the background of the story, of how the mother was raised, if she attended the recitals herself. The present, on how she is raising her daughter now. And the reasons she gives on why she might not be able to attend the party.
