As you know, we are branching out into new areas of International Human Rights

practice and are interested in taking up high profile cases that could enhance our

reputation.

Yesterday I had a meeting with Sahara Hall, the director of the human rights

group, LifeStory. They would like us to prepare a presentation for a conference

they are organising on the subject of what constitutes a person for the purposes

of Human Rights Law. The specific questions they wish us to address are:

 What, if any, is the difference between a human and a person in Human

Rights Law?

 Is a foetus a human, and/or a person?

 Could some animals possess some or all of the characteristics of a

person?

 What is the rationale behind allowing companies to claim status as a

person when they are definitely not human?

You should address how these questions have been considered by human rights

systems and experts around the world, although LifeStory are particularly

interested in how these questions might be resolved within the UK legal system.
