Read the book “God of Carnage” and “Fences” by August Wilson. Then answer questions of the attached file respectively

1. How does dramatic language help to create character through dialogue in God of Carnage?  …and in Fences? Identify and describe one example from each play.

As an example, let’s take Alan from God of Carnage. To answer the question, I would look at one or more of Alan’s lines of dialogue that reveal his personality. Then, I would describe how his choice of words and the way he uses language helps to define his character:

Character: Alan

Line of Dialogue: “He understands he’s behaved like a thug, he does not understand that he’s disfigured his playmate.

How Language Creates Character: Alan’s choice of words and tone is that of a successful lawyer. He uses words to defend and attack, to prove and to disprove. In this way, he is very sharp and direct. His sentences are direct and he wastes no time in getting right to the point. Also, he’s quite competitive, even mocking Veronica’s use of the words “disfigured” and “playmate.”

2. In God of Carnage, loyalties change over the course of the plot. First, it’s married couple against married couple. Later, it’s men against women. Other times, there are other combinations. Identify two specific moments in the play where this happens. Write out the lines of dialogue and describe the specific shift in loyalties.

3. What specific dialogue by any of the characters in Fences informs you about major aspects of Troyís character? Give two examples. For each example, write out the line or lines of dialogue and explain what that line or those lines reveal about Troy.

4. In Fences, Troy is the protagonist. The other characters function as confidants, foils, antagonists, raisonneurs, or unconventional characters. Choose two of any of the characters, apart from Troy, and, for each one, explain how they function as one or more of these classifications of characters. Remember, that a character can function in more than one way.

5. What personality traits or given circumstances among the characters in either God of Carnage or in Fences help to create tension and conflict within the scope of the story? How do they do so? Describe and address how this is achieved for at least two characters.

6. Are the characters in Fences well-conceived in the way that the concept is defined by the lecture videos? Choose one character from the play and explain why you believe the character is well-conceived or not. Include in your answer what a well-conceived character is. Your answer should be concise and complete.
