Archival Research Short Paper Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
Throughout this course students will use the course text and module resources to construct several short papers that address the question(s) listed in the specific module assignment prompt. These papers are not opinion papers and should NOT contain simply an opinion on the question or events but rather an ANALYSIS of the information provided. This paper demonstrates the student’s ability to navigate various archives in search of material on which to base their research proposal. It also demonstrates the student’s ability to analyze the value of that material to the overall project.
Format
Short Papers assignments should follow these formatting guidelines: 2-4 pages, double-spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and citations in Chicago Manual format.
Introduction Introduction is clearly defined and identifies the topic, the archives consulted, and the materials found
Content: Description of the Archival Objects Provides strong insight into overall topic question by providing detailed descriptions of the archival objects including a description of which collection, box, folder, or inventory the objects came from
Conclusion Conclusion is clearly defined; Includes effective conclusions about the archival objects and how they will enhance the research topic

Organization There is a clear beginning, middle, and end; Ideas flow logically

Integration/Application of Citation and Sources Paraphrases and/or integrates quotes effectively; No errors related to Chicago Manual format

Writing
Mechanics No errors related to grammar and style
