It should be a co-requisite with Medication Administration and Math for Medication, as part of the Patient Safety phase of the program. To move on to the subsequent phases and graduate, students must pass the course with a grade of C+ or better.Provide two examples of teaching strategies utilizing the following:

1.Electronic health record as a learning tool: students can review their patients’ charts to assess progress notes and other charting aspects that may be easily susceptible to error, and students may learn how to chart progress notes that are clear, concise, and may stand the test of legality during an investigation (Chastain, 2002).

2. A teaching strategy from the QSEN project specifying a specific student assignment relevant to nursing informatics: Students are introduced to the concept of communication and I-SBAR reporting/safe patient handoff through an in-class lecture and an at-home activity (Fetter, 2009).
