Research Methods Independent or Dependent variables
Antisocial behaviour among teenagers is currently a serious problem troubling many communities across the country. An increasing number of teenagers, particularly in the evenings, very often under the influence of alcohol and drugs, smash windscreens, house windows, telephone booths, and harass or attack passers by. Imagine that you are asked to propose a study aimed at understanding the reasons behind this phenomenon.
Could you please devise a quantitative study that would shed some light onto why teenagers behave the way they do. Please explain the various aspects of your study below.
a) What would your research hypothesis/question be?
b) Explain very briefly (in three lines maximum) what you intend to do, describing the specific actions you intend to take.
c) What would the design of the study be? Explain the reasons why you have chosen that particular design. (4 marks)
d) What would your variables be? If you have any Independent or Dependent variables indicate what they will be.
e) State the type of scale (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) you would use to measure each of your variables.
f) State who your participants would be, how many, and their main demographic characteristics.
g) Explain how you would select and recruit your participants. (2 marks)
h) What method(s) of data collection would you use and why?
i) Describe the instruments of data collection you would use to measure each variable (e.g. if you describe a questionnaire, mention number of scales and variable(s) they measure, as well as number and content of questions you would be asking). You are free to refer to either existing or hypothetical instruments.
j) Indicate any methodological problems you may encounter during data collection and how you would intend to solve them. (4 marks)
k) Indicate any ethical problems you may encounter during data collection and how you would intend to solve them (Try to go beyond giving the participants the necessary information prior to the study, debriefing them, and reassuring them about anonymity and their right to withdraw. Consider these as given.) (4 marks)
l) Indicate the type of statistical analysis (statistical test) you would use and the variables that will be included. Give the reasons for your choice of analysis and be as precise as you can when you describe the test (e.g. if it is a t test, indicate what type of t test).
m) What would you expect to find?
n) How confident would you be about claiming causal relationships between your variables and why?
o) Could you think of any problems that may threaten the external validity of your study?
p) If you were asked to conduct a further study, based on the information you will have collected in this one, what would the aim of that study be?
