Introduction:
This critical research and theory paper discusses and explores the role that applying Tibetan traditional costume concepts into current
fashion designs can perform well in encouraging the Chinese young generation to engage with wearing their traditional costumes. There
are 56 ethnic groups in China (Travel China Guide 2016), and they have different ethnic traditional costumes, for avoiding irrelevant
discussion in this paper, Tibetan traditional costume is the topic of discussion. (Cite any survey or data about fast disappear or
decrease of traditional costume art)… This paper addresses designers taking inspiration from traditions, as a way of reinvigorating and
developing traditional aesthetics and handicraft in current fashion industry.
Before the Age of Discovery in the 15th century, in (ancient) China, and even Asia, almost all nationalities and ethnic groups had
distinct clothing systems. People usually wore their traditional national costume. During the industrial revolution of Europe in the
1850’s, western countries got further developed in a great extent and even began to dominate the world. They influenced eastern
countriesin many ways, including clothing culture. Li (2005) states that because of flourishing modern industry and communication,
those western countries that dominatedin scientific and military affairs extended their culture, including clothing, around the world.
Thus, contemporary garments are mainly the outcome of the influence of western culture.
However, designers are increasingly beginning to look at eastern culture whilst taking inspirations from it.
