Josquin’s “Ave Maria, virgo…serena” and the madrigal by John Farmer are examples of music from the sacred and secular worlds of the Renaissance.
The listening guides are on pp. 83 and 79; the music is on the website.
1) In which piece is the melody more important, and in which is the rhythm more important?
2) Of course both pieces use melody and rhythm. How would you describe the differences in the rhythm and melody of both this pieces?
3) What sort of meaning or impression is conveyed to you by the melody and rhythm in these examples?

A Baroque opera like Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas wouldn’t seem to have much in common with a solo violin concerto like Antonio Vivaldi’s “Spring” from The Four Seasons, but in both works drama is a key element.
The listening guides are on pp. 125 and 104 in the text, the music is on both the CD-ROM and the online study guide, where the Purcell may be labeled “Thy hand, Belinda” and “When I am laid in earth” or simply “Dido’s Lament.”
1) What evidence of Baroque drama do you hear in these pieces?
2) In what ways do you think the harmony supports the drama of the music?
