Suggested steps:
1. Determine the scientific questions you want to investigate and the dataset that you plan to use. The dataset can be either your
own or one of the datasetsprovided on Blackboard. Find any relevant background information and literature for your study.
2. Identify the type of statistical analyses that can be used to investigate your scientific question.
3. At this point, if you think it would be useful, you can discuss with me the study that you plan to conduct.
4. Conduct the analysis in SAS and produce the necessary output.
5. Start writing the “scientific article” following the outline given in the next page.
————————– PROJECT OUTLINE ————————–
Abstract
Summarize the study, including the following elements: purpose of the study, brief description of the study, results, important
conclusions or questions that follow from the study. The abstract should be 300 words or less.
Introduction
Discuss relevant background information and literature reviewed to provide the rationale for the study (include references). State the
relevance of this research and potential for contribution to the field of study. You will have to lay out clearly the overall idea,
thesis, or concern that you are attempting to address. Start out with accepted or known facts, and then show why it is important to know
more about the subject. The reader should have a good idea of what your paper will discuss from your introduction. The introduction should
not exceed 2 pages.
Methods
In this section data gathering and data analysis are presented. It describes the entire research process to the reader, giving him a very
clear idea about how the study was conducted. A description of study design, sampling strategy, data collection, and statistical methods
should be included in this section. [You can assume that anybody reading your paper is familiar with all of the basic methods, so try not
to explain very basic details.]
Results
The purpose of a results section is to present and illustrate your findings; you should only include relevant tables and graphs (a maximum
of 3 tables and 3 graphs). Make this section a completely objective report of the results, and save all interpretation for the discussion.
Discussion
The objective here is to provide an interpretation of your results and support for all of your conclusions, using evidence from your
study. The significance of findings should be clearly described. This section should contain interpretations, recommendations,
suggestions, and speculation.
