EDS 715: Culminating Master’s Project Overview of Assignments – research paper, study guide
1. Research paper (Description follows)
Students will complete a research paper.
• The first page is the title page with the Title of the research paper in the center. In the upper right hand corner is a short title that appears on every page. The running head is 50 characters or less. (The running head is what gets printed across the top of journal pages. It literally begins with the words “Running head.” The 50 characters include spaces. It is not the same as the ‘short title’, which goes in the header next to the page number for the purpose of identifying your paper.)
• The next page is the Table of Contents followed by the Abstract. Note that the beginning line of the abstract is not indented. It should be an interesting, short, accurate representation of what your paper says in not more than 150 words. Because conciseness is so important in the abstract, use digits for all numbers except at the beginning of sentences. Try to restructure sentences so they do not begin with a number. Also, use abbreviations more liberally than you would in the body of the paper (less common abbreviations need to be explained, just as you would in the body of the paper). See the APA Manual for the content required in an abstract.
• The Introduction begins on page 3 and introduces the reader to the topic. This part also contains a rationale as to why the topic you selected is important and what the purpose of the paper actually is. The last paragraph usually begins with “The purpose of this paper is to…”
• Next comes the “Definition of Terms,” a glossary that accompanies your paper. You need not make up these definitions yourself; you can use definitions from various sources and need not give citations for them. Select terms that would be confusing or which are esoteric for inclusion in your definition of terms.
• Review of the Literature is the heart of your paper. You may need to organize it using a variety of headings. Remember that you need introductory paragraphs, clear topic sentences and logical conclusions or summary statements. Remember, too, that this is a research paper and should not include your own opinions at this point. To see the specific organization of the paper, refer to the APA Manual of Style (5th Edition). You can also check out Google.com or http://www.thewritesource.com/APA/APA.HTM for support.
Your “Summary of Review of Literature” is just that, a summary of what you’ve written to this point in the paper. At this point, you may also include your own thoughts, opinions, or positions; however, be sure to label them as that.
• IMPLICATIONS and APPLICATIONS
The outcomes of educational research can help us learn about how the world “works,” but the quest doesn’t end there. Findings inevitably inspire new questions that lead to further research, and they may have broader impact and applications. For instance, the studies that looked at the academic achievement of children with disabilities in self contained and general classrooms found that children did better in general ed.
o As you participate in research and learn more about special education and related issues, you should consider:
o What is Pre-K? (History) Pre-K today? New Common Core Pre-k
o What difference does this make?
o How can I use this information in my practice?
o Who might be interested in the results?
o How might different types of people respond to the findings?
o What new research studies might the findings inspire?
o What do we want to communicate about this study? Who will we target and what approach will we use (e.g., presentation, newsletter, article)?
o What new questions do we have or next steps will be taken?
Since all research leaves many unanswered questions or stimulates our thoughts and ideas for new areas of research, “Implications and Applications” should discuss ways in which to use and apply this information to the practice of special education, the families and children it serves, and the educational community at large.
