Real or Virtual Museum/Cathedral Visit

Real or Virtual Museum/Cathedral Visit
“Humanities is a term that encompasses a variety of disciplines that help us to understand how we function as members of a culture that exists in time and space and that has a history and a worldview (or worldviews) that allows its members to understand themselves as part of the world in which they live.” In order to do this, we will look at “… several themes, issues, or “problems” that affect all cultures: art and material culture (the things we make to help us live in and make sense of our culture and to express ourselves), communication, technology, and other phenomena that help us form our self-image as a member of a culture.”

As an aspect of “art and material culture,” the intent of this paper is to examine one of the cultural productions of a given culture or era and relate it to the themes and issues we have been discussing in class, demonstrating how this product represents the self-image of the people or culture who produced it.

The project description is also given in the Syllabus, as follows:

Project (20%): Real or Virtual Museum/Cathedral (or other place of worship) Visit

You will visit any museum or cathedral (or other place of worship such as mosque or temple) in your area and write a 1,000—1,500 word paper. The paper should be double-spaced, with a title and header page, to include photographs if possible and references in the MLA format (although you may use APA format if you are already familiar with it).

Option 1

For the museum visit, you will write about a specific item in the museum (painting, sculpture, artifact, manuscript) of your choosing. Place the item within the context of one of the periods discussed in the text or in one of our conferences and explain how it relates to its particular time frame/period. Describe the object. What is the thematic content? What broad assumptions about human nature does it make? Does the object reinforce the dominant values of the time or undermine them? You are encouraged to do additional research, although you must cite your sources in the MLA format.

For the cathedral or other place of worship (eg temple, mosque, etc) visit, you may write about a specific item in the building or about its architectural style in general. Place the item or the building as a whole within its historical context. What ideas and values does the building evoke? How is the building similar or different to other places of worship built around the same time? You are encouraged to use additional research, although you must cite your sources in the MLA format.

Option 2

If you are unable to make a personal visit by reason of your location, you may do an online virtual tour. In the Course Content section you will find links to an assortment of virtual tours of famous museums and cathedrals where you might find something of interest to you. There are some additional links also in the Webliography. Proceed as for the live visit, above.
Make sure you read the descriptions carefully and include in your essay all the main criteria: description, historical context, thematic content, relevance to human values at the time of construction, and insight provided to human nature as a whole.
