Question One:

How has the creation of a new and more varied definition of terrorism helped the United States government understand the aims, goals, and motivations of terrorists groups? Conversely, how has the lack of a universal definition of terrorism hindered the United Nations’ efforts to dismantle terrorist organizations? In your opinion, in the decade since the September 11th 2001 attacks has the United States government instituted enough policies to protect against a future attack? If so, how? Are policies such as the Patriot Act effective? Why or why not? Furthermore, describe some of the consequences for the United States when it captured killed Osama bin Laden in 2011? How has al-Qaeda changed since the killing of Osama bin Laden? What can the United States government do to prevent future terrorist attacks?

Describe “Red Terror” within the Soviet Union? How did the Soviet government utilize state terrorism? How has the collapse of communism impacted terrorism around the world? Why has the world turned a blind eye to Chechnya? Discuss why the activities going on in Chechnya by Russia may be considered state terror? What mistakes has the Russian government made when combating terrorism? Describe the spread of Islamic extremism in the Russian republics and why this problem may be far from over?

Question Three:

Discuss the terrorist strategy of suicide bombings and its effect on urban centers? Contrast the methods employed by Palestinian terrorist in the 1970s to gain worldwide attention with their attempts to influence government with different style Palestinian terrorist attacks in the first decade of the 21st century. Describe how democracy in the Middle East is changing the course of events in countries such as, Syria and Egypt and how replacing the old one-party dictatorial regimes may lead to the rise of Islamic extremist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood. How has the overthrow of Colonel Qaddafi in Libya and Hosni Mubarak in Egypt led to a deterioration in Middle East security?
