For London choose Mrs. Dalloway (Virginia Woolf) and For Naples, choose My Brilliant Friend (Elena Ferrante)
Essay Question: What does each author reveal about London or Naples, and how does she or he describe, or evoke, the urban setting when developing the themes of the text?
WRITING TIP: The most successful essays will identify features in each text (similarities or dissimilarities) that allow you to develop a meaningful comparison between two works of literature. For some essays the differences between fiction and non-fiction may be important, while in others you may find common patterns (such as the movement of characters through public and domestic urban spaces, or their being inside or outside the city).
Be sure that your thesis includes both the texts you’ll be discussing and analyzing in the body of the essay. For citations, please use footnotes prepared according to the Chicago Manual of Style .
