Managing Organization Issues I

Managing Organization Issues I
Data Visualization Assignment
It is important for managers to be able to communicate in different ways using written,
oral, and visual communication. According to the Social Science Research Network,
65% of people are visual learners. To communicate your messages effectively to various
audiences, you need to be able to communicate with others through different channels.
For example, I can communicate via written word here that sharks kill approximately 12
people each year. However, humans kill 12 sharks every 4 seconds. In total that adds to
humans killing approximately 11,471 sharks per hour or 100 million sharks per year.
Through written communication, these facts are difficult to visualize. The information
does not have the same impact as the infographic (information graphic) found through the
link below (you will need to zoom in and scroll to get the full effect).

An infographic is a very basic data visualization tool. Inforgraphicsare created to
simplify complex information for a targeted demographic through the use of images,
graphics, statistics and writing. For this assignment, you will create a visual
representation of a management issue that is important to you (i.e., sustainable
management, globalization, workplace diversity).
Prepare an infographic along with a 250 word explanation of your infographic. You may
complete the infographic using a free program such as Easel.ly (http://www.easel.ly/) or
Piktochart (http://piktochart.com/). If you have experience with any Adobe systems (such
as InDesign, Photoshop, etc.), it is highly suggested that you utilize those skills for this
assignment. Examples of infographics are included at the end of this document. For the
assignment, you must
1. Choose a management issue and narrow your focus and purpose. When
selecting a management issue, start with a general topic such as “sustainable
management”. From this general topic, pick a subtopic such as “the environment”.
From this subtopic, research something even more specific like salmon farming,
ocean acidification and impacts on the shellfish industry, forestry, fresh water
management, etc.
2. Select your target demographic (who is the audience for this information?).
3. Create a well-designed infographic that helps your audience visualize the
information.
4. Provide clear content (in the form of statistics, graphics, and writing) that
connects with course material.
5. Write a 250 word summary about your infographic, topic and target demographic.
6. Include references (specific statistics on your infographic must be referenced).
Your references should be gathered from news articles (from reputable sources)
and academic (peer-reviewed) sources such as journal articles and books.

****If you have a special topic you would like to research for this assignment, please
double-check with your TA.
