Civil Rights Movement
To have full appreciation for the efforts and achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, to “visualize” the struggle it truly was to finally defeat segregation & Jim Crow America, to understand what “Civil Disobedience” & “Peaceful Confrontation” was (Martin Luther King Jr.’s strategies), I believe it is beat to see video clips on the key events of that time period.
Thus, first watch every one of the videos in the Civil Rights Era Video Clips File in the “Assignment” page (watch them in the order listed). Then answer these questions in either your Essay/Virtual Chat:
1. How do these videos help you “appreciate” the Civil Rights Movement in a way that reading alone could not? Now that you have seen the video clips, what role do you suppose television had at the time (a new household item) in changing hearts & minds than without it?
2. Does seeing these videos “shock” you of what America was like then? Does this change your perspective of America? Why/why not?
3. From the examples that you saw, what did “Civil Disobedience” and “Peaceful Confrontation” really mean?
4. Now about MLK’s speech:
a. After watching all the videos, does what he mention about America make more sense now?
b. How and why did he use analogies, visuals and historical/Biblical references to get his point across to both the live and television audience?
c. Is this speech still relevant, even with an African-American president?
