Active Learning Lab 5 – Other Senses

Activity 1 – Proprioception

For this activity, we will investigate our sense of proprioception with three short exercises. The exercises will involve locating your fingers without visual input, locating a target you are holding without visual input, and writing a word without visual input. Before starting the exercises, consider the following questions.

What is proprioception?
Why should we study proprioception?
What are we doing today?
Who is your participant? What are some important characteristics of your participant?
Exercise 1

Mark an “X” on a piece of paper. Pencil in hand, raise your hand above your head, close your eyes and make a dot as near as possible to the X. Open your eyes and check your success. Raise your hand above your head again, close your eyes and attempt to make a dot closer to the X. Do this several times. Switch hands and repeat.

Before the exercise: What do you think will happen?

After the exercise: Were you right? How accurate were you with each hand? Did you improve over time? Did you make a similar pattern of mistakes (e.g., too high, too low, etc.)
Consider the following:
Why did you think you got the results you got?

Is this consistent/inconsistent with previous knowledge/literature?

Why or why not?

Were there any limitations to the methodology?

What might you do next?

What questions did your exercise not answer?

How might you apply this knowledge to real world settings?

For this exercise:
27 yrs old – 15 years of education, Lady
20 yrs old – 17 years of education, Man
20 yrs old – 17 years of education, Man
22 yrs old – 18 years of education, Lady

All participants are right-handed. All started with dominant hand.
All did 5 times (trials) by each hand.
More accurate after each trial and did better using right hand.
Each of the participants has different size of X and different height between hand and the paper.
