MUS 124 Concert Report

Attend a concert featuring non-Western music during this, the current semester, and submit a report of the performance. You may not attend concerts that would fall under the broad popular music heading. That means no rock, rap, country, punk, DJ, etc. Concerts that are not "popular" but would fall under the broad heading of "Western" (Classical music, jazz, etc.) are also not acceptable (Note – a jazz concert is not allowed, but a Latin jazz concert is; be sure you know the content ahead of time). If you have questions about a particular concert, be sure you ask me BEFORE you write a review.

Places to find performances:

– Robert E. Brown Center for World Music (UIUC campus) http://cwm.illinois.edu/

– Independent Media Center (IMC) in Urbana, IL http://www.ucimc.org/

– Mike and Molly’s Bar in Champaign, IL (for Irish music occasionally) http://mikenmollys.com/

– CU Jazz and Blues Org. calendar (for Latin Jazz shows only) http://www.cujazz.org/

Web URL’s are listed in the content page.

Type your report in prose (write a paper – do not just write content in bullet points).

Length: Minimum of two pages (12 point font)

Address all of the following criteria that apply. (content not limited specifically to this list to or necessarily in this order):

· Date & place of performance

· Name of ensemble/group/artist

· Describe the venue where the concert took place

· Was the venue appropriate and suitable for this style of music and method of performance?

· Describe the audience (age, sex, color, etc.)

· What type of instruments or vocal technique was used?

· If provided, list what pieces were performed and the composers of each

· Discuss the contrast of pieces within the concert.

· Describe the texture (monophonic, polyphonic, homophonic, heterophonic)

· Was there a connection between the performers and the audience? Should there have been?

· Did you enjoy the performance? Why or why not?

· Why did you attend that particular concert? Do not answer, Because I had to for class.

Your paper should be as detailed as possible. This is a good opportunity to use some of the vocabulary you mayy have learned from this class. During a performance, while the lights are low and the performance is happening, you may not be able to take notes. If this is the case, make sure you make some mental notes about what you are hearing and wait for a break or intermission to write them down. You will likely want to write your paper as soon as possible after attending the concert while images and impressions are still the freshest.

Assume that whoever reads your paper has not attended the same concert and try to make the performance come alive in the readers mind. Describe the music/event in as much detail as you can.
