endnote format; and 6) Involve the use of authoritative and diverse sources, amongst other considerations. There are a couple of ways you
might go about writing your position paper. First, you could adopt the position of a particular organization or institution in the debate.
For example, you could adopt the position or use the research of the organic food industry, consumer groups, farmers or seed producers,
agribusiness and biotech associations – such as the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the European Union, California Right to Know, Just
Label It, Golden Rice Project, Union of Concerned Scientists, Center for Food Safety, Center for Science in the Public Interest, National
Research Council and/or UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
Second, you could focus on developing a few specific arguments. For example, you could evaluate the scientific evidence supporting or
opposing more stringent labeling and regulation of genetically modified foods such as that produced by the National Academy of Sciences or
the World Health Organization, the beneficial or harmful properties of genetically engineered seeds and animals, their productivity, public
health and environmental impacts, public opinion toward genetic engineering and foods, their utility in combatting hunger and malnutrition in
the developing world, the ethical or religious issues associated with genetic engineering, the positive or negative consequences of the
precautionary principle, the competitive impacts of labeling on the organic food industry, the efficacy or lack thereof of labeling
strategies and the worldwide experience with them.
Much of your research will probably be internet-based, but you are encouraged to use other sources. Above all, you should use scholarly
research articles.
