How we fall can make us grow
The Journey
The journey in Coehlo’s The Alchemist can be seen in terms of the shepherd’s physical journey from one geographical space to another. Or the journey could be the passing of time. In both cases, we can see a movement from the known to the unknown, from comfort to risk, which results in growth. In our lives, we also make a journey along our own road. For this paper, you must explore the allegorical nature of The Alchemist by making connections between its journey and a real life journey. Choose one of the options below:
1. Write a paper that shows the connections between Santiago’s journey in The Alchemist and a journey you’ve been on. As mentioned above, your journey could be a literal road that you had to travel, or the ‘road’ could just refer to the passage of time.
2. Compare The Alchemist with Motorcycle Diaries. Write a paper that shows the relationship, the parallels, between Santiago’s journey and the road that Ernesto, Che Guevara, travels on.
For this paper, you do not need a formal introduction or thesis, but you should have a general opening paragraph that introduces a common theme. I will tell you more about this during class. In the body, explore the complexities of the journey. Make sure the paper ‘shows’ the connections (at least three) between both stories. Focus on important similarities that pertain to the growth of the characters. When referring to The Alchemist, quote or summarize. After the quote, interpret it in your own words. Explain its meaning. Then, ‘show’ and explain its relationship to the other story. Another important requirement is that you make sure to make connections from at least three very different stages of The Alchemist. The paper needs to show that The Alchemist was completed. As long as you meet these requirements, you can be as creative as you want in how you choose to use The Alchemist to cast a light on your personal story or the story in the film.
Write one paragraph that discusses one specific connection between The Alchemist and Motorcycle Diaries or your life. In other words, find one passages in The Alchemist, explain/interpret the meaning of the passage, and then show an example from the movie or your life which connects to the passage, and explain the connection.
