Rise of Complex Societies

Rise of Complex Societies
At this point, we have completed our case studies on the rise of complex society. We have examined the evidence from the Near East, Egypt, and parts of Mesoamerica. Now, it’s time to think broadly about theories on the rise of complexity. Take another look at the theories (Urban Revolution, Hydraulic Theory, Resource Poor Area, Circumscription, etc.). I’m going to ask you once again to think about which theories most best fit the evidence for emerging complexity but, this time, think more broadly. Incorporate all of the regions about which we’ve studied. What theories seem to apply everywhere (here’s one hint: the Maya did NOT use irrigation). In writing this final essay, keep two things in mind:

1. Make sure you include specific evidence. If you think trade was key, at what sites do we see trade? What is the evidence for it? (example: jade at San Lorenzo). You don’t need to include all of the evidence since this is a short essay but include some of it and draw from more than one culture area (such Mesoamerica and Egypt).

2. We are concerned with the RISE of complexity, so make sure you focus on the appropriate periods. For example, don’t talk about Egyptian pharaohs and pyramids. By the time they appear, we have had civilization for almost 500 years. We want to know how we got there – how did we go from bands to tribes and tribes to chiefdoms.

This essay is a bit longer. It should be approximately 500 words, double spaced (about 2 pages).
