Social Deviance
Answer both of the two following questions and answer them fully. You MUST leave the questions you select within the text of your document so that it is absolutely clear which question you are answering (so I know which question you are answering). You MUST answer your questions within this document; you should select ‘save as’ and name the document with your name and final exam (i.e. John Doe_Final Exam.doc). Your answers MUST be typed, 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman font, in one of the following (.doc, .docx, .rtf) file formats. A failure to follow these formatting directions may result in a deduction of up to 5 points. You should always cite your sources, but you SHOULD NOT just copy and paste sections of text from other authors; I want you to synthesize theories, concepts, and the like in your own words. I expect you to use standard ASA or APA citation and style for in-text citation and end references. Points will be deducted for improper citation style. I expect that most complete/good answers will be 2-3 pages (EACH) in length, though quality is not solely determined by length in words or pages. Your exam is due by 5 pm on Thursday, August 6th on Blackboard. The submission portal for the exam is clearly located in Module 3.
1. Describe, in your own words, a behavior you feel is clearly deviant OR a behavior society defines as deviant that you feel should not be considered as such. In your description make sure to tell why regardless of which position you may choose. Then use a particular theory from one of the sociological perspectives/epistemologies you feel best explains this form of deviance (or “non” deviance, in your opinion). Be sure to explain in detail how the theory describes this phenomenon (i.e. in regards to power, social control, social structure, interaction, social strain, and the like). DO NOT just say “theory X describes deviant behavior Y” and leave it at that. You need to clearly connect a behavior, the sociological definition of this behavior, an epistemological approach’s interpretation of this behavior, a theory’s explanation of this behavior, and how applying that theory explains this deviance in respect to societal perception of the phenomenon or outcomes/consequences of that phenomenon.
2. Describe one of the following social phenomena defined as “deviant” that can be viewed or studied on all levels of analysis: suicide, police brutality, or hate crime. Construct a brief study that tells me the (1) epistemology and theory used, (2) data/sample, (3) how you would collect the data, and (4) the basic research question for each level of analysis discussed this term with your selected deviant phenomenon (so that is 4 proposed studies which should amount to about ½ page each or 2 pages total, roughly speaking). Then tell me the keys to (or difficulties with) studying your phenomenon on multiple levels of analysis? Specifically, how is it beneficial to see how one phenomenon looks/or is observed by the researcher from these different levels. What does it tell you about the phenomenon?
