Composition
Write an essay where you identify 2 or 3 relevant poetry terms/ concepts to discuss a specific theme of the poem; use your analysis of specific elements in the poem to show how those elements relate to each other to support the poem’s theme. The specific analysis you make about the poem will be your thesis, so you will support this thesis by drawing examples and evidence from the poem itself.

The poem you choose to discuss in your Poetry Essay must meet the following criteria:
1. It is published in the course textbook.
2. It is not written by William Shakespeare.
3. It is not Hughes’ “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (the example paper is about this poem, so you cannot discuss it)
4. It is a poem. DO NOT select a song.

Analyze how the poem works:
First, what is the poem’s theme- love, war, death, peace, historical context, humor?

Then, what poetic techniques and figures of speech are used to help “show” this theme in the poem- metaphor, simile, setting, tone, voice, personification, irony, rhyme, form, sound, etc.? Select at least two but no more than three! Do not use a dictionary to define terms; define terminology in your own words.

***Hint: you may want to include very brief definitions of the terms in the introduction paragraph. Do not use dictionary definitions; you need to provide a short definition of the term. Then in the body paragraphs provide a reading / interpretation of the poem using the terms you have chosen. I suggest that you devote one paragraph per term. For example, if you want to discuss the metaphors and the sound in the poem, devote one body paragraph to the metaphors and a second body paragraph to the sound(s) in the poem.

The Poem to be used is “On her loving two equally” by Aphra Behn
Do not use any sources beside the poem itself.

Watch this speech.

1. Is the speaker making a proposition of fact, value, or policy? Explain the characteristics of the proposition the speaker uses.

2. Can you identify any fallacies in this speech? Identify at least 3 fallacies and explain why each is considered a fallacy.

3. How might using Monroe’s Motivated Sequence help to minimize possible fallacies?

B)

1- Respond to this: ( 4 to 8 sentences is enough)

“    The speaker proposition of fact, value, or policy on heroism were some facts on heroes. He explained what a hero is and some values of being a hero. He gave examples of action in ways we can all go out and be a hero. As for fallacies I didn’t understand him with a cape. There is a differences in a super hero to a real true hero like in war. He went from super man to lord of the rings then jumping over tall buildings, I was just a little confused. But over all mean thing was just about being a hero, I feel the themonroe motivated sequence could of him organized and line out the speech little better with the five steps.

2- ALSO THIS:

“1: I feel that the speaker was making a proposition of fact.  Even though he was talking about being a hero to others.  He was also giving information as to what the word “hero” means.  He also gave information as to how to be a hero to others.
2: Fallacies are stating that we are a society that is centered on self gratification, self motivation, and self indulgence but gave no proof or facts on the subject.  He said we were seeing the slow death of the hero, but again gave no information on his statement.
3: Using the Monroe sequence would have helped to keep the speech more organized and on topic.  Using the Monroe sequence forces a person to think about the process of the speech more clearly and more organized.

Watch this speech.

1. What is the goal of this speech (convince, actuate, inspire)? What do you think the audience’s attitude was toward this topic (supportive, resistent, neutral)? Critique the intention of the speaker (change, instill, intensify) in terms of the persuasive strategies reviewed in Chapters 16 and 17.
2. Evaluate the evidence (or lack of) presented in the speech. How did it impact the speaker’s character (ethos)? What would you have added (or left out) to improve credibility?
3. Identify one example in this speech of a logical appeal and an emotional appeal (logos, pathos)? Explain for each example why it was or was not effective.

D)

1- Respond to this: ( 4 to 8 sentences is enough)

“I believe the purpose behind this speech was to inspire people to see the other side of the issue. I think the speaker’s attitude toward the subject was powerful and supportive since he himself was a gay man, he had his opinions but he also had facts and stories. I think the speaker intended his speech to help change people’s perceptions on same sex marriages and to convince that same sex couples are like everyone else and deserve the same rights.Honestly I think he had a great amount of facts behind his speech, not only did he have a heartfelt story that really showed how the lack of freedom same sex couples deal with. But he also had supportive facts that showed from experiments how humans can intentionally help what they are attracted to. These I find very helpful for his case.

An example of emotional appeal for this speech was compassion I found myself feeling so sad when he told the story of the couple being separated and then passing away, I found this very effective to the speech. An example of logical appeal would be the logical standpoint on why American would want to avoid same sex marriages. I don’t find this as effective to the point being made.”

2- ALSO THIS:

“    The speaker was trying to convince the audience that guy relationship are ok. The audience seemed to be neutral about the topic. The intent of the speech is wanting to change law to allow guy marriages. The speakers ethos presented a flat tone in his voice and not enuf eye contact to the audience. I felt he kept looking down at his paper to much. Also he had put him self in the speech for credibility maybe when he said he was guy, I didn’t feel that it helped. For pathos the speaker uses the store of the two guy couple who did not get to see each before death, cause the hospital would not let them not being related. With using the store and other examples his logos is to explain why guy marriages should be legal.

Watch both Part 1 and Part 2 of this speech.

1. Did the speaker “take care” of her audience? Explain how she did or did not.
2. Did the speaker consider and include audience demographics in her speech? Explain and provide examples.
3. Could a “white” speaker deliver this same speech? Explain your answer (consider the audience-topic-speaker connection).

B)

1- Respond to this: ( 4 to 8 sentences is enough)

“1. The speaker takes care of her audience very well. She lightens the mood up and gets everyone laughing about the topic. It seemed to be that she had the audiences attention for the entire speech. She kept them engaged at all times.
2. Yes, the speaker does include audience demographics in her speech by interacting with not just black people in the class, but the whites as well. She asks one of the white students to say it with her. She does not segregate anyone during this speech.
3. Anyone could deliver the same speech, its just the fact that most people could find it offensive if it was not a black person. It is a word a lot of people don’t take kindly. I could see a lot of people shooting down a white person trying to deliver the same exact speech.”

2- ALSO THIS:

“1. The speaker is fantastic!  She interacts well with her audience, keeps a great pace, keeps the laughter rolling, but doesn’t let the audience interfere with her flow.  Marlita takes care of her audience by really engaging them, she makes eye contact, points, and draws them in.
2.  I do believe Marlita had a good grasp of who her audience was and how to present her topic given who the audience would be.  The easiest way to tell this is to simply listen!  Her audience is obviously taking her topic well and it’s being not only well received, but they are truly engaged.
3.  A white speaker would have to be extraordinary to deliver this speech.  Not saying it would be impossible, but we’re talking the white person it would take to deliver this would be extremely rare.  (The only reason I think it’s even possible is because of singer Eminem).  Myself, I would never even approach this type of speech.  I do not even find it appropriate to say the word.”

1. Describe your process for finding and evaluating credible and useful supporting material for your informative speech. Provide at least two academic source sites that you visit to conduct research.
2. Define and describe one type of supporting material you are utilizing in your informative speech and the guideline(s) for using it according to Chapter 7. How will it enhance your speech (delivery)?

D)

1- Respond to this: ( 4 to 8 sentences is enough)

“1. My process for finding and evaluating credible and useful supporting material for my informative speech will include the following: (1) I will try to avoid articles and papers that are based on overgeneralization and only rely on credible sources with published research. (2) I will research my sources for statistical relevancy and try to vet bogus research and expert testimony that is not credible.

2. I will be utilizing the FAA Section 333 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (FRMA) to help enhance my speech. This document outlines the requirements to fly drones commercially. This will enhance my speech because it will help the audience understand the struggle to become exempt from the FAA requirements to legally fly drones for profit, which is what my speech will revolve around.”

2- ALSO THIS:

“1. For finding and evaluating credible material for my speech I will be going through the Academic Search Premiere through Ebscohost, I find that the sources are reliable and informative.
2. A supporting material I will be using to guide my speech will be the official organ donor.gov website, it is the best choice to have the right facts on why being an organ donor is so important.”
