Marx speaks of the “phantom” objectivity (in another translation, the “ghostly reality”) of the commodity. What does he mean by the commodity’s “phantom objectivity”? What is the basis of this ghostliness? And, further what is the fetish of commodity and how is it related to this unreal reality? The thesis should be developed by engaging with a contemporary example and with an eye on the political and ethical consequences of the concept of commodity fetishism. (These concepts are used by Marx in Das Kapital – volume I, Part 1, Chapter 1, Section 4)
