Write an essay (six pages for each question) to answer each question below. Each essay should follow APA guidelines, be between 6-8 pages in length, and be fully researched and supported by refereed reference material. For each question, please use the book of Classics of Organization Theory for Jay M. Shafritz J. Steven Ott Yong Suk Jang, seventh edition. In addition to this book, please use eight academic journals from PAR (Public Administration Review). The academic journals must be only from Public Administration Review. In some cases this may be new research for you or an area that you will have to do significant background research to fully explore the question.
Course 2: Organizational Theory
1. Explore Graham Allison’s statement, “Public and private organizations are alike in all unimportant respects.” How does such an argument shape the practical application of theory?
2. What are the primary tenets of Utilitarianism, how do these constructs impact decision-making in the public realm?
3. Discuss the key characteristics of Classical Theory and Organizational Behavior Theory; what is/are the primary differences between these two perspectives? What does it mean to say that these two theories focus our context in different directions. Why are each of these perspectives important to public organizations in particular.
4. Organizational culture is the culture that exists in an organization, “something akin to a societal culture.” Therefore, organizational culture is “contextually driven” and is comprised of many intangible things such as “values, beliefs, assumptions, perceptions, artifacts, and patterns of behavior.” What does all this mean? Use the previously stated concepts in answering your question (e.g., “unwritten rules” and “unspoken language”).
