Research Essay: Issues in Higher Education

Purpose:
For this essay, we will work on developing research skills and an understanding of MLA format. We will explore how to determine a research focus, conduct library and internet research, evaluate sources, integrate and synthesize outside sources, and present a research-driven argument.

Texts:
*Use seven to ten documented scholarly sources (of those, you must use at least three scholarly journal articles)
*You may use one to two class texts

Topic:
Throughout the semester, we have discussed various issues of social and economic injustice and the responsibility of the public to evaluate such issues from an ethical perspective and demand change when necessary. For the research paper, you will think critically about the most pressing issues college students face today and consider potential solutions.

In a 7-10 page researched and thesis-driven essay, you will:

• focus on one (specific) critical socio-economic issue in higher education
• research, identify, and define the problem
• explain the significance, consequences, and deeper implications of the issue
• and propose a potential solution

Potential topics:
Budget cuts (and the impact on community colleges, transfer rates, etc)
Your essay must:
• be typed (Times New Roman 12 pt font), double-spaced, paginated, and stapled
• 7-10 pages, not including the Works Cited page
• be formatted properly according to MLA style
• follow MLA guidelines for quotations, source integration, and citation
• offer a clearly stated thesis and relevant, ample evidence that is integrated smoothly and analyzed persuasively
• contain only 1-2 long quotations
