Paper Three
In many ways television and movies are directly descended from Greek
drama. Much has changed over the past 2,500 years, though. In this paper I want
you to consider a film of your choice and analyze it using all the tools we have
practiced this semester, but primarily I want you to look for commonalities or
contrasts with ancient Greek drama. Here are some suggestions:

What are the qualities of heroism in your film? Would the ancient Greeks
have considered the heroes in your film heroic? What do the qualities of
modern heroes reveal about how our values have changed? What does your
film seem to consider heroic? Do you agree?
What type of mythic role would your movie fill? Does it test taboos for the
audience? Does it define a culture? Does it explain why things are the way
they are?
Consider the theme of fate, which was very important in Greek myth. Is it
inevitable in your movie, or can characters overcome their destinies? What
does this reveal about how modern culture feels differently about destiny
from the ancient Greeks?
What are the values the movie suggests about its culture? Does it share the
same taboos as the ancient Greeks (family, the gods, hospitality)? Is hubris
punished? Are transgressions against hospitality and family treated with the
same level of scorn?
Consider the modes of comedy, tragedy, and even satyr plays. Which category
does your movie seem to fall in? Does tragedy bring catharsis for you when
watching the film, and do the film makers seem to expect it to? What kind of
comedy is your film? Does it enlighten, or merely excite?
If you wish to write about a different idea, please discuss it with me to be on
the safe side.

Do not forget all the other things we’ve worked on this semester. You should
still consider figurative language, for example, if it helps with your
interpretation of your movie. You should still be able to apply fictional elements
and styles of interpretation when applicable.
Research and comparisons to our readings are not required, but neither are
they discouraged. I want this paper to display whatever expertise you have
developed this semester, as well as hopefully showing that what we have done is
not completely alien to our everyday lives outside this course.
