UNIT 4: IS DEVIANCE BAD FOR SOCIETY?
Deviance and Crime
WRITING ASSIGNMENT: 55 points
1 .Writing about Society (20 points). Over the next three days, watch your local television news, keeping a written record of the racial identity of every criminal noted in the news. Also keep a record of what kind of crime is being reported (you can also use a local news website if you do not have TV). At the end of your observation period, count how many images of each racial group you have observed and the type of crime reported and write your results. Next, compare these findings to the actual facts about crime reported by the FBI in 2009 (this can be found at: http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_43.html), noting any differences in the percentages of race by the types of crime actually committed versus those reported in the media. Explain what your results suggest about racial stereotyping and crime reporting in the media.
2. Criminals, deviants, both or neither?(15 points). The high arrest rate of poor people and/or minorities means that they commit more crimes. Explain this (false) statement using the conservative, liberal and radical explanations as described by Collins. Then, choose one sociological theory that you feel is most explanatory in relation to the statement above. Which of these perspectives do you agree with, and why?
3. Exploring Index Crimes (20 points). The Federal Bureau of Investigation website (www.fbi.gov/) is particularly useful for its crime statistics and reports information. This includes the Uniform Crime Reports, as well as reports on hate crimes, terrorism, family violence, corporate fraud, and initiatives like SafeStreets. Conduct research on one crime of interest to you, and write a brief analytic report on the dimensions and trends of this crime. What is one of the consequences of only keeping track of the crimes found in these statistics?
