Researching Your Debate Topic (privacy )
1.Read and review ideas in Chapter 9 of Writing as Response
2)Look at how your local, federal, or state representative is framing this issue (is your Congressman in the news for promoting your position or the opposite position?) See how they are describing their position
3)emember – It’s just as important to see how your opponent is framing the debate as it is for you to have a strategy and tactic
4)Look at associations (partisan or otherwise)
5)Consider which arguments work for your audience
6)Look for non partisan statistics about how the public feels (PEW Charitable Trust, ABC/Newsweek polls)
7)Search the topic in the EBSCO database or in national news papers / journals like The Atlantic, The New Yorker, TIME magazine, USA News Today, Washington Post,
8)Look at international sites for articles and research on crime/environment/nuclear energy/ADHD/ pharmaceuticals/RX drugs and children
9)Visit PRO/CON and see how debate topics are set up
10)Use study aids in Course Documents to review strategies and tactics.

Thoroughness and Variety of Research
Arguments MUST be based on CREDIBLE research/sources. Usually, the side that is better prepared in terms of having lots of research from great sources wins the debate for this reason.

A Formal “Worked Cited page” with correctly alphabetized entries of all the sources that you have cited during your five minute constructive argument.
A Bibliography list of all the articles you have reviewed to prepare for you debate. Copies of the first pages of these articles used.
