Digital and social opinion formation, advocacy and activism
Here are the tutor requires for this assignment:
You need to watch "We Are Legion – Story of the Hacktivists", which is a fascinating 90 minute documentary about Anonymous. You can stream it through the moodle site (http://canberra.kanopystreaming.com/node/93970 this is the link for that video). Also read your Youmans and York reading from this week (I will provide this in additional files). Once you’ve watched and thought about this – and I’ve put some prompts under the link on Moodle – I’d be very interested to hear your responses to one or some of the following (or feel free to discuss your own views outside these prompts, as long as they relate to the topic):
Are "chaotic" hacktivists like Anonymous useful for democracy? Do we need them to "keep the internet free"? Are they valuable voices of dissent or just geek mischief makers? Are they using the moral highground to justify their own need to wield power? Are hackers terrorists? Is the story of Anonymous one that demonstrates the democratic power of the internet – or the power of the digital divide, where those with tech skills and knowledge dominate? Do you find the possibilities illuminated by Anonymous liberating or terrifying? Just a note – it will be really obvious if you try and take part in the conversation and you haven’t watched the documentary! Looking forward to hearing from you all…..
This assignment need to discuss and answer above question by watching the video and read the journal
