Assessment title: Critical Review of a Performance

Programme: BBA7

Course name: Theatre Studies and Drama

Course number: GEN4120

Weighting: 40% of the final grade

Project Overview: This written project is an opportunity for students to assemble the various theoretical aspects of the course and to use their knowledge to evaluate and criticize a theatrical performance attended as a class.
Overall aim: Students should appraise a performance from a number of perspectives including historical and/or cultural context and setting, supporting their opinions with arguments relating to performance practice issues, such as stylistic interpretation, staging and aesthetics.
Learning outcomes from syllabus:
4. Discussing various aspects of performance practice, presenting arguments relating to historical and/or cultural and stylistic context.
5. Evaluate and criticize a performance attended.

Organisation and methodology:
The performance should be thoroughly evaluated in a detailed review offering the reader a background to the production and/or the company performing as well as an appraisal of the suitability of the venue and/or the theatrical piece performed in terms of staging and the audience. Aspects of performance practice, production values and artistic direction should be addressed, rated and supported with relevant facts and examples.

2. Aspect(s) of performance covered in review, explanation of critical evaluation of the performance, justification of views. 35%
3. Critical analysis of the overall artistic values of the production and creativity of the performance. 15%
