What is a substantive response
on a discussion board forum?
1. First, the response must show that the writer read the reading and watched the lecture. All readings, documentaries, and readings

for the week must be referenced.

How can you show that you did the work? You can:
a. quote one or more phrases or sentences and discuss/
analyze/critique them
b. reference “the ______ section of the reading, on page ___.”
c. summarize a section, capturing the essence of what the author said
d. quote a statistic the author used
e. quote a statement a speaker made
f. refer to a specific scene in a documentary

2. Second, the response must be written NOT ONLY at the literal level, but at the interpretive or applied level. What does that

mean?

– repeating what someone said or wrote is not enough – that’s literal
– attempting to understand and explain what was meant by an author or speaker is the level of interpretation
– questioning, refuting, or supporting something the author or filmmaker or speaker said by giving a website or article or book with

a similar point of view is interpretation
– questioning, refuting, or supporting something the author said or shown by citing specific examples from your own experience is

interpretation
– attempting to take something in the reading or documentary or presentation and apply it to our everyday lives, our own

experiences, the experiences of those we have worked with, something in another reading, a societal problem, a developmental theory, etc.

is the level of application
