Social Work and Human Services

Complete the activity in question # 1 under the heading “Exploring Social Work” (Hick, 2010, p.110).

Families are complex: Sometimes “graphic organizers” can be helpful in beginning to understand family dynamics. For practice, plot a genogram and an ecomap (see sidebar on page 95) of your own family, showing the complex relations between your family members-today and over generations-and how you and various members of your family interact with people and institutions in ways that might be relevant to a better understanding of your family today (Hick, 2010, p.110).

Search online for examples of genograms and ecomaps. If you have access to a library, examples and further descriptions are in this book below. Note the page numbers (pp. 255-257):

Sheafor, B.W., & Horesji, C. R. (2003). Techniques and guidelines for social work practice. (6th ed.) New York, NY: Allyn and Bacon.
