Research Paper- Fahrenheit 451

ASSIGNMENT:

You are to write a paper on a literary topic related to Fahrenheit 451. Begin reading the novel on the first day of class and complete reading by midterm. Do not wait until the final days of class to write your research paper.

Think about questions like this:

-Does the novel contain a great deal of symbolism?
Perhaps you could write a paper that deals with Bradbury’s use of symbolism in Fahrenheit 451. If so, be specific and choose one recurring symbol or a symbol that plays a large part in your interpretation of the novel’s overall meaning or purpose.
A symbol could be a color, an object, an element (like fire or water), a part of nature (a flower, an animal, a tree, the sky, etc.), a season, a religious symbol, an element of the weather (storms, rain, heat, wind, or sun), a time of day (morning or night, for example), lightness or darkness, etc.
-How does the change in setting affect the development of the plot?
-Does Fahrenheit 451 have a particular theme that you could analyze?
How does Bradbury convey that theme (through what literary devices) and what is the effect created?
Common literary themes are: a great journey (could be both literal and figurative); loss of innocence; the noble sacrifice; the great battle (could be between forces, like man v. nature, man v. God, man v. self); the fall from grace; love and friendship; revenge; fate; life’s great mystery; death and rebirth; the unhealable wound.
-Does the author use a metaphor that is particularly poignant or interesting?
Could you analyze that metaphor and discuss its importance in the novel?

Choose a thesis that will prove something about your topic. Do NOT write an informative essay about the author’s biography or recap/summarize the story. Literary analysis requires you to argue something/prove a point. This means that the position you take has to be arguable (i.e. someone else could argue against it). You are not tasked with providing me with a factual account of the novel’s events; instead, you should be arguing for your unique interpretation of some aspect of the novel.

Example: The setting and characters in The Great Gatsby suggest that affluence results in dangerous repercussions. (Then prove it.)
Example: Hemingway uses nature to symbolize death in A Farewell to Arms. (Then prove it.)
Begin planning your literary research paper now. This is an ongoing project that you will work on while you do other lessons in this course.
GUIDELINES:

In determining the grade for the paper, I will consider form (mechanics, grammar), formatting, content, documentation, and process. Each will affect the final grade for the paper.

Research Paper criteria:

The RP should be 7-10 double-spaced pages (not including the title page, the outline, or Works Cited pages).
The RP should quote or paraphrase a minimum of 7-8 outside sources:
include a variety of sources: books, articles, newspapers, and websites (as long as there is an author listed – do NOT use web sources without an author)
limit Internet sources to 2 (with the exception of articles or books found on databases – these count as regular print sources
Cliffs Notes, Masterplots, Monarch, Answers.com, and Wikipedia are NOT appropriate sources
sources should be properly cited within your paper using in-text (parenthetical citations) and then listed on the Works Cited page
each of the sources used in the Works Cited must be used at least once in the research paper
direct quotations from sources will comprise no more than 25% of the paper
paraphrases and summaries may constitute substantially more of the paper
An annotated bibliography listing your outside resources may be turned in before the research paper is written.
This gives you the opportunity to check sources to ensure they are valid, academic resources and that your Works Cited entries contain the necessary publication information from the sources. The CTC library staff may help you with this.
The Research Paper must be formatted according to the rules of MLA. Follow the guidelines from Chapter 37 of Literature: Craft & Voice and/or Chapter 32 in The St. Martin’s Handbook.
Heading
Creative title centered above paper
Times New Roman 12-point font
Double-spaced
Indented paragraphs
Proper citation of sources
The Research Paper must be submitted using the SafeAssign link provided (after the BioSig Verification) on the Research Paper Lesson folder.
Please note that submitting the paper will occur at the end of the quarter and will require that you complete the last Bio Sig Verification to do so. This submission link will not be visible until you verify the signature with the Bio Verification above. DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SUBMIT THE PAPER.
The Research Paper should be formally written and edited:
The level of diction should be formal (no slang, contractions, jargon, or technical terms without definition).
The paper should be well written and scholarly.
All borrowed information must be noted whether quoted or not.
All words should be spelled correctly and errors in sentence structure eliminated.
You will find a sample research paper, including a sample Works Cited page, at the Purdue OWL website. If you have purchased The St. Martin’s Handbook, you can find a sample in Chapter 4. Information about formal outlines is in Chapter 3. The order of pages in the paper is title page, outline, body of paper, Works Cited. These are all to be saved and sent to me as one document.
