As part of the formal assessment for the Masters Entry Diploma in HRM you are required to
submit a Global Human Resource Management assessment. Please refer to your Student
Handbook for full details of the programme assessment scheme and general information on
preparing and submitting assessments.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing the module you should be able to:
1. Identify different approaches to human resource management in other countries and regions;
2. Compare and contrast global management practices;
3. Demonstrate awareness of cultural attitudes and issues, particularly in emerging countries;
4. Compare and contrast employee legislation between countries and regions;
5. Recognise global industrial relations requirements;
6. Identify needs of employees in various areas, including expatriates;
7. Critically appraise the effect of multinationals on global human resource management.
Your assignment should include: a title page containing your student number, the module
name, the submission deadline and a word count; the appendices if relevant; and a
reference list in BU Harvard format. You should address all the elements of the assignment
task listed below. Please note that tutors will use the assessment criteria set out below in
assessing your work.

Assignment task
Your task is to answer the following four questions.
The questions are equally weighted.
1. McDonalds, the fast food restaurant, operates in over a hundred countries worldwide.
Identify two of these countries, and explain the way in which both HR and general
management practices in McDonalds will differ in your two chosen countries.
2. Identify two areas in which employment law differs in your chosen countries. Explain the
way that these laws will affect the employment relationships between the management
and employees of McDonalds.
3. McDonalds is an example of a multi-national company. Explain the impact that multinational companies have had on the way in which
people are employed in different
countries.
4. If McDonalds decided to open in a new country it would have the choice of appointing a
manager from the USA (the home country of McDonalds) or a local manager to manage
the operations in that country. Summarise the advantages and disadvantages of each
approach.
