Introduction:
This assignment is to be done in three parts, for a total of 100 points. Each of the next three pages describes the requirements for

that Part of the submission, the amount of marks associated with it, and has a specific rubric on which you will be evaluated.

RUBRIC FOR PART A : AIDS READING LOG – 10 sources listed, summary, usage of source for argument. Demonstrate an ability to select,

organize, and interpret information gathered from a variety of print and electronic sources – 10 Marks

Communicate the results of your inquiries effectively – 10 Marks

Choose two of the following* organizations from which to debate points of view with respect to the AIDS epidemic:

the Roman Catholic Church
Medicins Sans Frontières
UNAIDS / UNICEF
the Stephen Lewis Foundation
a pharmaceutical company;
the Government of Canada
the Government of the Republic of South Africa
the Government of the United States of America

*You may choose an organization outside of this list with the teacher’s approval. This list was compiled on the basis that each of

these organizations have strong public opinions about the AIDS crisis and how to manage it.

Select one organization whose view you support. Research both the impact of HIV / AIDS in Africa and what your chosen organization is

doing about the problem. Develop your arguments by researching and reading the points of view of the secondary organization, to

determine what differing points of view you may encounter.

Part A: Reading Log (20 marks)

Include a summary, and all bibliographical information on each article or source read, listened to or viewed. You should read at least

5 sources from each “side” of the debate. Describe your personal reactions to the information, and your evaluation on how (or if) the

information for each article might be used for your own strategies. Submit your Reading Log as a separate file.

Part B: Debate Points (60 marks)

Appraise the differences and similarities in the methodologies and strategies of anthropology, psychology, and sociology applied to the

study of change – 10 Marks

Demonstrate an ability to select, organize, and interpret information gathered from a variety of print and electronic sources – 10

Prepare an opening statement as though you were writing a speech for a delegate from the first organization you researched to another

organization you researched. Prepare an opening statement for the second organization in a like manner. Each opening statement, when

read aloud, should be approximately 6 minutes in length.

You will then prepare a mock question-and-answer period between the two organizations. What questions would each have for the other?

What answers would be provided that would strengthen their respective positions? You should pose and answer at least 5 questions per

side.

While you are free to research freely on your own organizations and each organization will have different foci, you must determine your

organizations’ attitudes towards at least six of the following questions (note that some organizations will care about some of these

questions more than others):

What are the implications of AIDS to the global economy?
What is the cost to the global community of the AIDS epidemic?
Is anyone benefiting from the AIDS epidemic?
What do power structures have to do with AIDS prevalence?
What effects does the AIDS epidemic have on various governments?
What is the relationship between AIDS and civil unrest, crime or war?
What is the effect of AIDS on family relationships?
What is the effect of AIDS on the formation of in-groups?
What is the effect of the AIDS epidemic on religion or moral codes?
How have customs, traditions and cultural norms been affected by the AIDS epidemic?
Who / what is ultimately to blame for the increased prevalence of AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa?
What is the ideal (“wouldn’t it be nice”) solution to the AIDS crisis?
Submit a text version of your opening statements. Submit a copy of your question and answer section.
AIDS Written Report
RUBRIC FOR PART C: AIDS WRITTEN REPORT
Demonstrate an understanding of the social forces that influence and shape trends – 10 Marks
Appraise the differences and similarities in the approaches taken by anthropology, psychology, and sociology to the study of social

challenges pertaining to health, social injustice, and global concerns

Part C: Written Report (20 marks)
Finally, submit a one-to-two page report on a possible consensus between the two organizations that proposes how the two could work

together towards an HIV / AIDS related goal.
